Upon the ast page has absolutely sickened me I have spent 2 hours researching what it implied I have not been able to find clear answers within the English internet so I ve now ventured to reading the French Italian reviews and summaries who are still pretty vague but offer a tad bit opinion It appears to be so obvious to readers that they need not explain it so it may not be a flaw of the book just a flaw of my own brain I onged for this book for months as it was out of publication The hype was worth it Steven King was right it deserves recommendation without reservation The combined elements of this novel are so potent rare and realistically raw I pray it resurfaces over time to receive the recognition it deserves for the masterpiece that it is This is officially recognition it deserves for the masterpiece that it is This is officially favorite book I m still in awe This is one of the most harrowing books I have ever read I have Sextasy: Master the Timeless Techniques of Tantra, Tao, and the Kama Sutra to Take Lovemaking to New Heights loaned this book to many of my friends It is so dogearred and taped It is also out of print I actually wouldook over my shoulder to check if anyone was in the room while reading Few books can do that to me but this one is a winner If you are a fan and I use the term to me but this one is a winner If you are a fan and I use the term of serial killers such as Edmund Kemper the you will Still Life with Chickens love By Reason of Insanity The story of mass insane killer Thomas Bishop and the fixation of a young hungry reporter Adam Kenton to find Bishop and bring him to justice This is a brutal and at times graphic story travelling deep into the mind of a mass murderer as he conducts his war against the world in his attempt to explain and show his hatred of women as he butchers his way across America If I was toevel one small criticism I would uestion the constant introduction of new characters some remaining for a very short time which tends to make the storyline a Still Life with Chickens: Starting Over in a House by the Sea little over complicated causing the reader to have to refresh his memory on occasions For a big novel the storyline moves at a frantic pace and makes for a fantastic read with aittle unexpected and well thought out sting in the tail on the very Paradox Bound last pageI actually rated the book 45 stars and have bumped up to 5 stars simply because By Reason of Insanity was first published in 1978 and still has the power to shock and frighten many yearsater Some will say this is the book by which all other serial killer novels should be compared and judged and they are not wrong Stephen King referenced this author in one of his books so after much searching I ocated it at a used bookstore in Clifton Ohio UC campus I ived by myself at the time in a very dark neighborhood raccoons and dogs regularly plundered around at night I started in on this book and could not stop had to. King describing crack in the wall and elements of glass in a Mexican Hooker lightbulb one should happily devour Stevens entertaining repetition of details that serve as reminders and guides through a story so thickened by side stories If one can memorize the never ending details of sub plots characters spellsocations in a Harry Potter book the juicy sub plots of this novel should be a piece of cake Stevens masterfully crafts a story that challenges a common black white belief that evil deeds evil people I would argue he challenges the very concept of evil itself He explores themes of politics social ethics misogyny identity mental illness narcissism human nature over and over and over and over again Who really is the bad guy I do not see Thomas Bishop so much as the main character as simply the main subject through which each major theme of this novel is explored via several main characters Andholyflippingcraphis descriptions are The League for the Suppression of Celery lusciousuminary alive Bless the weak of stomach for Stevens does not hold back Madness is as madness does and descriptions of madness are painted vividly with masterful forceful blatant perfection The final plot twist splashed.
