OrytellerIn the interests of full disclosure I know Graeme though OU courses and I wholeheartedly this series It s the journey that matters not the arrivalThe first book of In The Storm seems to take this to heart as it is mainly one long journey and the reader is left to a large xtent wondering why That book also starts as if it is a Sword Sorcery xcept you soon notice well I m not using spoilers so I won t say what but it seems in book one that it s SteampunkWhen this book seemed intent on continuing with a journey my first reaction was Oh No But in this book we fairly soon get down was Oh No But in this book we fairly soon get down some xplanations which made the whole thing a lot njoyable There is still a lot puff mystery some of the party s xperiences may be magical or they may be high tech we can t tel Graeme Talboys will thus far be best known to Druid readers for his Druid non fiction work but this may be poised to change as he moves into the realm of Druid fiction The first book in his Jeniche of Antar series Stealing into Winter was an pic fantasy novel Exile and Pilgrim it s seuel is a Druid novel It s not your regular kind of Pagan fantasy ither no imagined mix of the Arthurian medieval romance and Celtic dreams here. Wo sides of the same coin Sometimes they ven shared the same word peregrinatio in Latin dreams here. Wo sides of the same coin Sometimes they ven shared the same word peregrinatio in Latin doesn’t seem obvious Exile means banishment and wandering while pilgrimage is a purposeful journey Exile is usually nforced while pilgrimage is voluntary Yet in describing the Exile and Pilgrim Shadow in the Storm Book Exile and Pilgrim is the second adventure from the chronicles of Jeniche of Antar an incredible follow up to Stealing Into Winter Introduced to us as a very accomplished thief and an soteric scholar Jeniche is coming into her own in the land of Ynysvron After a time of great chaos Jeniche has her own room books and regular meals She is starting to njoy life mentoring Cenau in Exile and Pilgrim Sha. .
This is the second novel in the Jeniche series and I ve been looking forward to it since finishing Stealing into Winter I am a bit compulsive about reading series in order and I would definitely recommend it hereJeniche the young thief of the first novel has really grown up as we meet her again She s acuired knowledge skill responsibility she has settled down But then she starts to notice that something is going on beneath the surface before she can slip away on her own again she is drawn into another adventure a uest for the Four Hallows the sword the stone circlet the spear and the cauldron This gives the novel a wonderfully mythic feel and takes us back to arlier uestions about the lost technologies of the pre Ev citiesThere are lots of uestions still to answer and many of them are about the importance of Jeniche herself Who is she I want to know and I want to know what her connection is with the lost pre Ev civilisation What is Ev An vent maybe and probably a catastrophic oneAs with the previous novel there s lots of action and xcitement The descriptions are so vivid that this world Comes Alive I Was Reading alive I was reading into the night as I just wanted to know what happens next always the sign of a master st. Read & Download Exile and PilgrimIn many ways Exile and Pilgrim reminded me of Ursula Le Guinn s Earthsea Books there s a plot cho with one of that set The sense of a landscape full of cultures histories and life lived is as vivid and compelling in Graeme s work as it is in Ursula sI relished the structure of this book On the surface there are a lot of familiar fantasy tropes the pic uest for the special things that can save a kingdom the young men undergoing trials and coming of age the unexpectedly magical ncounters the big set piece fight scenes Graeme hands them all deftly Jeniche the main character is a complex young woman a reluctant fighter former thief deeply honourable but also lost As a female reader I really appreciate getting female leads in books who Do Not Conform To Easy Stereotypes There not conform to asy stereotypes There nough sketching to make ven minor characters feel like
